Constructed by Washington-based Bellingham Marine and using the company’s unique Unifloat design, the new marina can accommodate vessels up to 203 feet in length. The Unifloat system is consistent with Bimini Bay Resort’s other marina, which includes safeguards to protect water quality and the environment. Studies show the Unifloat system provides four major environmental benefits:

      • Use of fewer piles leads to less bottom disturbance.
      • Use of concrete piles, instead of treated wood piles, is better for water quality.
   • Concrete’s high carbonate content is similar to naturally submerged rock, providing a large surface area to support marine life.
    • The presence of floating concrete docks leads to an increased population of filter feeders resulting in improved water quality.  In addition, Bimini Bay Resort’s marinas offer in-slip sewage pump-out services and prohibit overboard flushing of holding tanks, further protecting local water quality.

“The Bahamas is seeing tremendous growth in the need for quality boat slips, especially those that can house mega yachts,” said Rafael Reyes, president of Bimini Bay Resort and Marina. “Just as we have done with other developments at the resort, we wanted to ensure the new marina offers exceptional accommodations to our guests while being environmentally sensitive. Bellingham’s Unifloat dock system was selected for the dock system’s ability to provide increased habitat for marine life and to promote improved water quality.”

The mega yacht market is being strategically targeted in the Bahamas because of available space and the country’s natural tourism appeal. The Bahamas is currently home to about 3,100 boat slips with more being developed to accommodate growth.

Bimini Bay Resort’s original marina was constructed by Bellingham Marine in two phases between 2000 and 2007. Today, the two marinas boast a combined 232 slips, including 136 slips for boats 40 to 128 feet in length, and offer power, water, television and telephone access. The marinas also sport an on-site harbormaster and a customs and immigration office. Plans for a gas station, supply store, a restaurant and other amenities are on the way. The mega yacht marina also offers gated security, a reception area, dining opportunities and a fitness center.
