Wolfsburg / New York, 20 March 2008 – The Passat BlueMotion is one of the most environmentally friendly cars worldwide. The jury of international judges of the “World Car of the Year Awards” awarded Volkswagen, which came in third, the famous prize this Thursday in New York. Wolfgang Hatz, Head of Volkswagen Group Powertrain Development, received the award. “The Passat BlueMotion,” said Hatz, “is, with fuel consumption of 5.1 litres diesel, one of the world’s most economical cars in its category and is also very affordable. Our ‘BlueMotion’ label is increasingly becoming a model for a whole new generation of economical cars. We are very proud that the jury of the “World Car of the Year Awards” honoured this model role.”

Volkswagen currently has seven BlueMotion models in its range. This will increase to ten in the short term. The Passat belongs to the biggest vehicles featuring BlueMotion technology. Exemplary for a car in this segment is, besides the consumption, also the low CO2 emissions of 136 g/km. With fuel consumption of 5.2 litres and 137 g/km CO2, the Passat Variant, also available as a BlueMotion version, is on an equally excellent level. Both Passat BlueMotion vehicles are powered by a 77 kW / 105 hp TDI engine.

In judging the top 3 of the “World Green Cars 2008”, the Passat BlueMotion successfully competed against several hybrid models as well as a fuel cell vehicle. The award was presented as part of the New York International Auto Show (March 19-30). The jury is made up of journalists from 24 countries.
